The role of the Rolling Stock Maintenance Technician involves the inspection, upkeep, and repair of railway vehicles and associated equipment. Responsibilities include painting and marking freight and passenger cars as well as locomotives; performing carpentry tasks on locomotives and shop facilities (excluding those tasks designated for Maintenance Of Way personnel); rerailing rolling stock using blocking, cables, and rerailing tools; connecting air hoses and testing air brakes in rail yards; and repairing rolling stock components in accordance with federal regulations and company standards. The technician will also provide locomotive maintenance, which encompasses repairs, part replacements, and adjustments (including electrical and electronic components); servicing locomotives with fuel and other necessary supplies; diagnosing locomotive component issues; assembling parts related to the diesel engine, air compressor, radiator, trucks, and car body; conducting locomotive inspections; completing maintenance reports; and performing additional essential and non-essential tasks as assigned.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adhere to company and regulatory safety protocols, exercise common sense, take necessary precautions (e.g., wearing protective gear), and maintain a high level of safety awareness in the workplace.
- Carry out maintenance tasks, both scheduled and on-demand, including air brake tests, lubrication of moving parts, and cleaning of components.
- Complete necessary documentation and reports related to vehicle repairs.
- Occasionally operate transport vehicles, cranes, locomotives, shop equipment, and company vehicles.
- Execute rerailing tasks utilizing blocking, cables, rerailing frogs, and heavy machinery.
- Be accountable for performing assigned duties and adhering to scheduled hours, including overtime, holidays, nights, weekends, and travel as required.
- Perform other essential and non-essential functions as assigned, including tasks typically assigned to other maintenance technicians.
Education, Licenses/Certifications, and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent is required. A valid driver's license is necessary and must be insurable under the company's commercial auto policy throughout employment. Employees will be required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of hire. Previous experience and knowledge of transportation or train operations is advantageous.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Mental Requirements:
- Proficient in mechanical aptitude and the application of mechanical principles.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to understand and convey written, graphic, and verbal instructions and seek clarification when necessary.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and comply with the General Code of Operating Rules, as well as federal regulations and company policies.
- Capability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, management, vendors, and contractors.
- Ability to make sound decisions in unfamiliar situations or when faced with interruptions and changes in work processes.
- Willingness to take responsibility, effectively address problems, and exercise independent judgment in decision-making.
Frequent activities include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking, and hearing. Occasional activities involve sitting, traveling, and lifting up to 100 pounds. Must possess visual acuity of at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without corrective lenses. Average hearing threshold must be 40 decibels at specified frequencies, with or without hearing aids. Must be able to distinguish colors with minimal errors in a color vision test.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The work environment is often outdoors, exposing the technician to various conditions, including:
- Extreme weather (cold and heat)
- Moisture (from snow, rain, and cleaning operations)
- Hazardous materials (oils, greases, battery acids)
- Noise from machinery
- Fumes, dust, and gases
- Moving equipment
- Vibration
- Work at various heights
- Battery hazards
- Malfunctioning electrical equipment
- Moving and rotating machinery (risk increases during night shifts)
- Exposure to cleaning agents and fuels
- Extended periods of continuous work
- Working with high and low voltage equipment
- Cooperation with other workers
