Job Summary

The Trauma Performance Improvement Nurse Coordinator is a critical role within the Trauma Program at Ventura County Medical Center. This position is responsible for supporting the needs and operations of the Trauma Program, working closely with the Trauma Program Manager (TPM) to ensure the highest level of patient care and quality improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct concurrent Level I review of patients within the program throughout their hospital stay, reviewing the plan of care for compliance with standards and clinical practice guidelines.
  • Identify variations or gaps in care and communicate deficiencies to involved care providers to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Review medical records and other source documents to collect clinical data of patients in the Trauma Program according to the specifications and guidelines of the applicable data element.
  • Keep TPM informed of patient status and report any unusual or trending variances to support active and timely performance improvement.
  • Assist the TPM with concurrent review and the coordination of patient care within the program as necessary.
  • Use trauma registry, hospital event reporting systems, multi-disciplinary rounds, and other relevant data to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Review trauma audit filters, outcomes, and benchmark reports to ensure adequate documentation is performed as required by the Ventura County Emergency Medical Services (VCEMS) and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS/COT).
  • Coordinate trauma PI projects.
  • Establish practice management guidelines.
  • Prepare report presentations for Level 2 review-Intake rounds.
  • Assist the Trauma Registrars with complex chart reviews to ensure accurate capture of diagnosis and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the TPM and Trauma Medical Director in the review and analysis of benchmark reports.
  • Collaborate with the TPM to assure the Trauma Performance Improvement Patient Safety (PIPS) program is driven by Trauma Registry data based on National Trauma Data Standards and Ventura County Emergency Medical Services (VCEMS) data requirements.
  • Identify quality improvement issues in the clinical setting.
  • Coordinate trauma care management within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Work with all clinical educators and Nursing Education division on continuing education for trauma staff across the continuum to ensure proficiency and competence.
Requirements
  • Requires three (3) years professional registered nursing experience in inpatient care, with a background in trauma care.
  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California.
  • Must have a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by the first day of employment.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) with an emphasis on emergency and/or critical care.
