Job Title: Mechanic Master

Fort Bend ISD is seeking a skilled Mechanic Master to join our team. As a key member of our transportation department, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing our fleet of school buses and white fleet vehicles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine mechanical work on school buses and white fleet vehicles, adhering to established preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain, repair, overhaul, and/or replace diesel and/or gasoline engines, transmissions, and differentials, hydraulic and air brake systems, power steering systems, ignition and electrical systems, computer and electronic control systems, air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Diagnose fleet vehicle issues using diagnostic equipment, inspection, and road testing.
  • Respond to service calls, operate a wrecker, and tow broken-down vehicles.
  • Operate cutting and welding equipment as required.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation during evenings and weekends.
  • Act as a substitute bus driver as needed.
Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Conduct vehicle inspections as required by the state and issue certified vehicle safe inspector decals.
  • Comply with all shop rules and safety measures.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties, keeping the shop area clean, safe, and orderly.
  • Complete work orders, prepare routine reports, and maintain files using fleet vehicle maintenance software.
  • Communicate with the Parts Department on needed parts, materials, and supplies for vehicle repairs.
Qualification Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Texas CDL Driver's License, Class A or B, with P and S endorsements, or must be obtained within 120 days of hire date.
  • Pass an Annual Physical (DOT) Department of Transportation.
  • Texas School Bus Driver Certification or obtain within 120 days.
  • Certification HFC - 134A or must be able to obtain within 1 year of hire date.
  • Valid Texas Vehicle Inspector's Certificate or must be obtained within one year of hire date.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a skilled mechanic in the maintenance and repair of light, medium, and heavy-duty automotive equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty automotive equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of tools and equipment pertinent to the trade.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction, and to communicate clearly and concisely, and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair both routine and complex problems on all types of automotive vehicles and components.
  • Ability to operate equipment and tools associated with the trade.
  • Ability to operate a computer, keep routine records, and prepare routine reports.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines; experience with alternative fuels preferred.

Work is performed in classrooms, offices, workstations, and meeting rooms. The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting/carrying work-related items weighing less than 40 pounds. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts that require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.

Work inside/outside in temperature extremes, slippery surfaces, noise, chemical exposure (fumes, vapor, gases, dust, smoke, etc.). Work around moving machinery and moving parts, moving objects or moving vehicles. Due to the nature of the position, being available after hours, weekends, and holidays is required. On-call situations to be expected.
