Job Summary

Decypher is seeking a highly skilled Histotechnician to join our team at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. As a Histotechnician, you will play a critical role in supporting the mission by providing expertise in histopathology and immunofluorescence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Observe Mohs surgeons during surgery and utilize knowledge of gross and microanatomy to properly orient and embed tissue for tangential examination.
  • Prepare maps of the surgical site and accept tissue from surgeons.
  • Use non-standardized techniques and procedures to mount and cut skin, cartilage, and bone.
  • Process complex tangentially cut frozen tissue sections while maintaining exact orientation to trace the extent of the tumor.
  • Utilize knowledge of stains and chemical reactions on tissue to select appropriate stains and procession procedures.
  • Prepare reagents for stains and make adjustments as required.
  • Review frozen sections using a microscope and accept or reject slides based on staining, orientation, representation, and histological landmarks.
  • Prepare additional slides when necessary.
  • Assist staff immune-dermatologists in research protocols as required.
  • Perform direct and indirect immunofluorescence on skin biopsy sections.
  • Prepare and stain tissue sections of skin with immunologic conjugates for direct immunofluorescence.
  • Spin down blood to separate serum for indirect immunofluorescence.
  • Maintain positive serum and tissue controls for this procedure.
  • Prepare thinly cut tissue sections for immunoperoxidase staining from Mohs frozen tissue specimens.
  • Operate, program, maintain, and troubleshoot various equipment, including microtomes, cryostats, tissue processors, strainers, and knife sharpeners.
  • Conduct quality control procedures on equipment and reagents and maintain proper records.
  • Utilize knowledge of accrediting and regulatory agency requirements for safety and quality control to ensure adherence by the laboratory.
  • Order and maintain adequate stock levels of laboratory supplies, equipment, and reagents.
  • Evaluate new stains and provide recommendations to supervisors.
  • Train resident and fellow physicians in the proper mapping, orienting, and preparation of tangentially cut frozen tissue sections.
  • Perform general support duties, including determining, organizing, and maintaining Mohs micrographic surgery and immunofluorescence log books.
  • Organize and maintain microscopic slide files of Mohs micrographic surgery cases.
  • Prepare and transfer reports and specimens to the Pathology Department for review.
  • Organize and maintain patient photographs, biopsy reports, and surgical summaries in convenience charts.
  • The technician is expected to work independently to maintain specimen identity and integrity in the treatment of skin cancers, often on highly cosmetically sensitive areas of the face.
  • The process of Mohs surgery often requires additional demands beyond typical business hours. The technician is expected to be flexible and remain available after hours until cases are completed or submitted specimens have been completely dispositioned and a safe stopping point has been reached.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, clean working area, exercising proper aseptic technique. The work area is to be completely cleaned at the end of every shift and readied for the next day of cases.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. May be required to travel to and work at SAMMC as directed.
  • At the direction of supervising dermatologic surgeons, CP will train other technicians in the key aspects of Mohs histopathology.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Histotechnology, medical technology, biological science, or a related field, or a certificate of successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician program.
  • Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS certifications preferred.
  • One year of experience within the last three years as a MOHs Histotechnician.
  • Board Certification: None. Must complete 10 CEU's in approved laboratory education programs annually.
  • Licensure/Registration: None

Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge in uses of aseptic technique and principles of infection control.
  • Knowledge of fundamentals of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills are essential.
