Position Overview

The Registered Nurse in the Infusion Unit is accountable for the comprehensive planning and execution of patient care through established nursing methodologies: assessment, implementation, and evaluation. This role entails overseeing the care plan, employing effective problem-solving techniques, and integrating evidence-based practices. The nurse will uphold the quality standards set forth by a Magnet-designated institution and adhere to the Patient Bill of Rights. This position operates under the guidance of the Nursing Manager/Director and is characterized by a commitment to continuous learning. The nurse will deliver compassionate, family-centered care to patients in the Hematology/Oncology department.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct thorough nursing assessments for all patients, ensuring effective communication regarding the patient's progress, including critical findings or changes in condition with the healthcare team.
Accurately complete patient admission histories and discharge planning in accordance with institutional policies, encompassing medication and allergy histories, as well as spiritual, cultural, developmental, educational, and psychosocial needs.
Confirm the accuracy of the patient's treatment plan, protocols, and physician orders. Administer chemotherapy and supportive medications in compliance with established medication administration and chemotherapy protocols, ensuring the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the safe disposal of hazardous materials.
Provide specialized nursing care to immunocompromised patients, including central line monitoring, laboratory draws, blood product administration, sepsis monitoring, and electrolyte management.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to plan, implement, and document the patient's care plan, ensuring safe and efficient delivery of services.
Delegate nursing responsibilities based on staff qualifications and competencies.
Perform reassessments in accordance with policy, particularly when there are changes in the care plan, following the administration of analgesics, or after any intervention.
Educate patients and families on health-related topics, including disease management, medication, chemotherapy, pain management, discharge instructions, safety, nutrition, and fever management, while providing information on additional resources available.
Foster a safe working environment by consistently delivering high-quality care, focusing on the prevention of medication errors, falls, central line infections, and ensuring effective communication during hand-offs.
Ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards set by relevant healthcare authorities.

Required Qualifications

Active RN Licensure in the State of Florida or Multi-State Enhanced Nursing License Compact (eNLC).
Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
PALS certification required within one year of employment.
Completion of the APHON Pediatric Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Course within one year of employment.

Skills and Competencies

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or enrollment in a BSN program.
At least one year of nursing experience in a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology setting is preferred.
Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) is preferred.
National certification as a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPHON) or (CPON) or BMTCN is preferred within five years of hire.
Ability to analyze and interpret clinical data to inform patient care decisions.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Capacity to positively influence others and maintain accountability.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
Competence in applying evidence-based practices and analytical thinking in clinical settings.
Flexibility to float to various nursing units as needed while maintaining high standards of clinical excellence.
Willingness to provide on-call coverage as per departmental policies.
