Role Summary:

The Vascular Imaging Specialist is responsible for executing daily clinical tasks and a variety of technical procedures, including peripheral vascular, venous reflux, and carotid ultrasound. This role involves entering examination data into the CPACs system, ensuring the thoroughness of exams, and preparing results for interpretation. Adherence to National Patient Safety Goals is essential based on the level of patient interaction required for this position.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Director of Cardiovascular Services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts peripheral vascular, venous reflux, and carotid imaging in alignment with established protocols and best practices.
  • Assists physicians during procedures in the vein center.
  • Evaluates inpatient requisitions and organizes patient schedules based on urgency, special requests, and equipment availability.
  • Performs necessary quality control checks.
  • Manages the procurement, storage, and distribution of supplies for operational needs.
  • Ensures that reusable instruments are properly maintained and sanitized.
  • Reviews patient information and orders prior to procedures, confirming exam types and diagnoses.
  • Uploads examination images and data into the PACs system and documents findings upon completion.
  • Mentors and assesses ultrasound students as needed.
  • Communicates technical and patient care information following established protocols and timelines.
Qualifications

Educational Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED is mandatory.
  • Completion of a CAAHEP accredited ultrasound or cardiovascular technology program or equivalent experience is required.
Certifications:
  • Current certification from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) is required, or certification must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required upon hire.
  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently are essential.
Experience Requirements:
  • Understanding of diagnostic ultrasound principles and methodologies to perform high-quality studies.
  • Ability to discern which images to include, recognizing differences between healthy and pathological conditions.
  • Capability to adjust the scope of an exam based on pathology as needed.
  • Knowledge of vascular cross-sectional anatomy and pathophysiology.
  • Familiarity with m-mode, Doppler, and color flow characteristics.
  • Ability to identify vascular structures from various perspectives.
  • Understanding of ultrasound physics and instrumentation to optimize images and eliminate artifacts.
  • Proficiency in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting cardiovascular equipment.
