Position Overview

This role qualifies for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a reimbursement initiative for student loans. Candidates must fulfill specific eligibility criteria in line with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility duration (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office following a thorough review of the EDRP application.

Role Responsibilities

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is a highly trained nursing professional responsible for administering anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical or specialized procedures. Key responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing and managing anesthesia for a wide array of intricate surgical operations.
  • Adjusting anesthesia techniques to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Reacting to emergencies by providing airway management, administering emergency fluids and medications, and employing basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques for necessary resuscitation.
  • Integrating technology, skills, and knowledge to advance anesthesia practices, pharmacology, and equipment.
  • Implementing new developments and theories to identify and resolve complex anesthesia challenges.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and peers in a team-oriented approach to anesthesia care while combining management expertise with technical proficiency.
  • Understanding clinical and technical dimensions of anesthesia care, possessing comprehensive knowledge of anesthesia methodologies and techniques.
  • Serving as a mentor, preceptor, or educator, providing both theoretical and practical instruction for graduate-level nurse anesthesia students and other anesthesia professionals.
  • Engaging in the creation of anesthesia patient care audit processes, which involve detailed examination and analysis of anesthesia records.
  • Offering guidance and mentorship to prepare others for leadership roles and ethical practices impacting patient care.
Work Schedule: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM with 24-hour on-call duties 2-3 times monthly (schedule may vary based on patient care needs).

Qualifications and Requirements

Conditions of Employment:

Basic Requirements:
  • Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Education: Must be a graduate of a professional nursing school accredited by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and hold a degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program.
  • Licensure: Must hold a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse.
  • Certification: Certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists is required for employment.
Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, pushing, and pulling, along with the ability to stand for extended periods and perform various physical tasks.
