Nuclear Medicine Technologist Job Summary

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist works closely with the lead technologist to coordinate the daily operations and functions of Nuclear Medicine Services. This role is responsible for all QC/QA on equipment and patient doses. In the absence of the Lead Technologist, the Nuclear Medicine Technologist will assume the duties of the lead technologist.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Works with the charge technologist to coordinate the daily patient flow and functions of Nuclear Medicine Services.
  • Assesses performance of quality control procedures and documentation regarding equipment checks as well as calibrations on pharmaceutical tagging.
  • Assures proper receipt, handling and disposal of radioactive materials according to regulations and policies.
  • Proficient in performing all exams and can assume the duties of the charge technologist in his/her absence.
  • Orders supplies as necessary.
  • Knowledgeable about departmental and RRMC policies and procedures.
  • Assists or performs any duties that the charge technologist delegates.
  • Prepares stock solutions of radiopharmaceuticals and materials; calculates and administers doses under the direct supervision of a Radiologist.
  • Calibrates equipment.
  • Assesses patient's understanding of exam and informed consent.
  • Performs diagnostic exams on patients as prescribed by physician.
  • Uses scanners or scintillation cameras for detection of radiation emitted to produce image of organ.
  • Measures radioactivity using Geiger counters, scalers and scintillation detectors.
  • Follows radiation safety techniques and policies in the use and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric and general population.
  • Assesses, evaluates and informs physician of changes in patient's condition during testing.
  • Instructs and prepares patient for exam.
  • Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing exams.
  • Understands contraindications and potential hazards of different labs.
  • Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures.
  • Takes calls according to monthly schedules, after regular department hours.
  • Compiles and maintains quality assurance information.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the following age groups: neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric and general population.
Requirements:
  • Associate Degree
  • Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMTCB), or Registered Radiographer (ARRT)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support, or CPR for Healthcare Providers must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
