Position Overview

Role: Assistant Animal Keeper

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Animal Keeper plays a vital role in enhancing visitor engagement by upholding exemplary standards in the care, exhibition, and educational utilization of our living collections. This position is dedicated to the daily management of a variety of animal species and their habitats, while also developing and delivering educational programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide daily care for a diverse array of over 150 specimens, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates.
  • Assist in the upkeep and routine maintenance of various support areas, including the Live Animal Care Center and Insect Zoo.
  • Monitor visitor interactions within designated areas for up to two hours each day.
  • Design and facilitate 2 or more interactive educational programs or interpretative activities each week.
  • Work effectively in warm and humid environments.
  • Availability for weekend and holiday shifts as required.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Part-Time (Friday & Saturday) from 9 AM to 5 PM.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

Reports to the Manager of Living Collections.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of post-secondary coursework, technical degree, or vocational certificate.
  • A minimum of 6 months of experience in animal care.
  • Proven ability to care for both domestic and exotic animals.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience engaging with the public in a fast-paced environment.

COMPENSATION:

Non-Exempt (Hourly). Starting at $20.00/hour.
