This role is situated within the Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (PRRTP) at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. The incumbent will report directly to the Nurse Manager of Behavioral Health/PRRTP.
Key Responsibilities:
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will be responsible for delivering direct care to residents and executing all tasks within the boundaries of their licensure. The complexity of the duties may necessitate routine or detailed higher-level review.
Eligibility Criteria:
Citizenship: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
Language Proficiency: Proficiency in basic written and spoken English is mandatory for all direct patient care roles.
Educational Background:
Graduates from a practical or vocational nursing program accredited by the appropriate State agency or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) are eligible. Exceptions may apply for military healthcare education or training accepted by the licensing body.
Licensure:
Active, full, current, and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in any U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth is required.
Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must meet specific qualification criteria for each grade level. The qualifications must clearly demonstrate the required competence for the grade.
Work Environment:
Duties will primarily be performed in the PRRTP, with potential reassignment based on resident care needs. Responsibilities include:
- Providing direct patient care in accordance with practice privileges and licensure.
- Explaining procedures to patients in an understandable manner, considering individual age-related and gender-specific needs.
- Maintaining a supportive physical and emotional environment aligned with patient-centered care principles.
- Responding promptly to patient requests for assistance and ensuring courteous interactions.
- Collaborating effectively with administrative staff, the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT), patients, and visitors.
- Offering emotional support to patients and their families to help them adjust to health changes.
Professional Development:
The LPN will demonstrate the ability to manage complex nursing assignments, including care for acute, long-term, or psychiatric patients requiring skilled nursing. The role also involves:
- Documenting significant patient information accurately and using sound judgment in applying procedures.
- Administering prescribed medications and treatments according to established policies.
- Recognizing and responding to urgent patient care situations, initiating appropriate emergency interventions.
- Providing education on activities of daily living (ADLs) to promote patient independence.
Work Schedule:
The position requires a commitment to a rotating schedule, including night shifts and weekends.
