Job Summary

The Department of Transportation is seeking a highly skilled Air Traffic Control Specialist to join our team. As an Air Traffic Control Specialist, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of air traffic.

Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate complex aviation incidents and accidents to determine causal factors and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare analytical reports on aviation incidents and events to compile and report results to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with air traffic control facilities to conduct initial investigations of complex aircraft accidents, near mid-air collision reports, major service disruptions, and incidents that receive significant media interest.
  • Support the Joint Air Traffic Operations Command (JATOC) by serving on rotating 24/7 shifts as an Air Traffic Safety Investigator (ATSI) and investigating safety incidents.
  • Coordinate and direct the initial safety response for significant incidents and communicate with the ATO Watch Officer (AWO) for sensitive information flowing to and from ATO senior leadership.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must submit an SF50.
  • Designated or Random Drug Testing required.
Qualifications

To meet the minimum requirements for this position, applicants must possess experience in a military or civilian air traffic facility that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the level of work of the specialization for which the application is made.

This experience must have provided a comprehensive knowledge of appropriate air traffic control laws, rules, and regulations.

Additionally, to qualify for this position, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the FV-J, FG/GS-14 level.

This experience is typically related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Specialized experience is defined as:

  • Experience separating and controlling air traffic in a terminal or en route air traffic facility to conduct the initial investigation of complex aircraft accidents, near mid-air collision reports, major service disruptions, and incidents that receive significant media interest.
  • Experience preparing analytical reports concerning aviation incidents or events to compile and report results of investigations to senior ATO leadership.
