Weymouth, Massachusetts, United States Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science Full time

Position Overview

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is a globally recognized authority in risk analysis, modelling, and epidemiology. Our dedicated Epidemiology and Risk Modelling team is at the forefront of providing robust scientific evidence that informs policy development and outbreak management. We specialize in quantitative risk assessment and modelling to effectively address incidents and outbreaks related to both endemic and exotic aquatic diseases, as well as invasions by non-native species. Our commitment lies in ensuring the sustainability and safety of aquatic ecosystems, and we are looking for two talented and driven professionals to enhance our risk management strategies. This role offers the chance to collaborate with esteemed scientists, stakeholders, and policymakers on both national and international platforms to design, implement, and oversee comprehensive risk assessment initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will encompass:

  • Developing and utilizing advanced qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methodologies and mathematical models to evaluate the national and international risks associated with aquatic animal diseases and non-native species invasions.
  • Leading and executing research initiatives focused on modelling infectious disease outbreaks, assessing ecosystem impacts, and evaluating the potential effects of climate change on species and disease dynamics.
  • Contributing to both qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for policy-making and trade discussions, as well as investigations into outbreaks and incursions. You will analyze data, interpret findings to evaluate risks, and communicate results through comprehensive reports, presentations, and publications that lead to actionable insights.
  • Staying abreast of the latest advancements in risk modelling techniques and participating in ongoing professional development and training opportunities. You will ensure that the risk assessments conducted are aligned with cutting-edge methodological advancements, particularly in the fields of epidemiology and aquatic animal health.
  • Ensuring the successful delivery of projects, advising policymakers on the outcomes, and providing consultancy services at both national and international levels.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • A strong foundation in mathematical modelling and statistical analysis, including proficiency in at least one programming language, such as R or Python.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and policies pertaining to animal health in aquatic environments.
  • A proven track record in infectious disease modelling and/or risk assessment, evidenced by publications in reputable international journals.
  • Expertise in ecological, statistical, and/or computational modelling techniques.
  • Experience in developing risk management strategies and policies, including qualitative risk assessments necessary for outbreak, incursion, or trade negotiations.
  • In-depth knowledge and capability to advise decision-makers on risk models and provide consultancy on risk assessments.
  • Experience in successfully securing funding through grant applications.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A postgraduate degree in Mathematics or Biological Sciences with a focus on modelling and statistical analysis, or the ability to demonstrate proficiency in all essential criteria outlined in this specification.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, Cefas offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • A generous annual leave entitlement, starting at 25 days and increasing to 30 days over the first five years, along with 8 public holidays and an additional day for the King's birthday.
  • Access to tailored learning and development opportunities relevant to your role.
  • A flexible working environment that promotes work-life balance.
  • A culture that values inclusion and diversity.
  • Eligibility to join the Civil Service Pension scheme.
  • Recognition through staff vouchers and an in-year award scheme.
