As a Certified Respiratory Therapist at HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake, you will be responsible for initiating, assessing, and evaluating all forms of respiratory therapy, including bronchodilators, chest physical therapy, oxygen therapy, and non-invasive and invasive ventilator care. You will exercise technical knowledge in respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology, as well as the design and operations of all respiratory therapy equipment.
Responsibilities- Verify and sign all new orders for respiratory care, ensuring they coincide with current departmental policy.
- Recognize, interpret, and record signs and symptoms of respiratory dysfunction and medication side effects, particularly those requiring notification of a physician.
- Effectively and safely use equipment for administering oxygen and other therapeutic gases, as well as providing humidification, nebulization, and medication.
- Understand the principles of arterial blood gas analysis, acid-base balance, and demonstrate competence in obtaining arterial blood gas samples.
- Know and understand the methods that assist in the removal of secretions from the bronchial tree, such as hydration, breathing, and coughing exercises, postural drainage, therapeutic percussion, and vibration, and mechanical clearing of the airway through proper suctioning technique.
- Know the operating principles of equipment and all safety aspects related to equipment and gases, including the control of electrical, flammable, explosive, and mechanical hazards.
- Know the procedures for the proper cleaning and care of departmental equipment.
- Accurately record therapy and the results of treatment in the patient medical record.
- Demonstrate knowledge and perform annual clinical competencies in drawing arterial blood gases from radial, brachial, and femoral sites, including punctures and a-lines.
- Assist in the orientation and education of respiratory care students.
- Act as a clinical resource to all hospital staff in respiratory care.
- Report all operational problems, patient complaints, and physician issues to the supervisor.
