Role Summary

The Chief Veterinary Officer is tasked with overseeing medical and surgical operations within both the clinic and shelter medicine departments. This role is pivotal in ensuring that established protocols and processes are adhered to, thereby delivering exceptional medical care to the animals entrusted to our organization.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute the responsibilities of a veterinarian, including diagnosing and treating sick and injured animals, prescribing medications, and conducting surgical procedures.
  • Coordinate schedules for veterinarians and provide consultation on complex medical and surgical cases, maintaining final authority on challenging medical decisions.
  • Guide and mentor veterinary staff, including veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and animal care personnel, while conducting performance evaluations.
  • Oversee the recruitment, training, and performance assessment of all veterinarians within the organization.
  • Address medical complaints and concerns from clients effectively.
  • Manage the procurement and administration of controlled substances, ensuring meticulous record-keeping.
  • Ensure quality control in both clinic and shelter medicine, adhering to safety, disease control, and OSHA standards.
  • Comply with Veterinary Practice Act standards.
  • Meet financial objectives as outlined in the budget.
  • Promote Michigan Humane's initiatives and foster goodwill among clients and staff, participating in special events as necessary.
Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with ongoing professional development.
  • Must possess a valid license from the State of Michigan, along with eligibility for a controlled substance license, DEA license, and USDA accreditation.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a veterinary clinic environment.
  • Previous experience in management or supervisory roles is advantageous.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
