Job Summary

The Surgical Technician/CST is a vital member of the healthcare team, working under the supervision of the registered nurse to provide safe and effective care to patients during the intra-operative period. This role requires strong communication and teamwork skills, as well as the ability to maintain a clean and safe environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the RN with patient admission, providing input on patient condition and notifying the RN and/or physician of critical findings.
  • Retrieve supplies and equipment from the medication room as directed by the RN.
  • Scrubs on all types of surgical procedures, assisting the surgical team by passing instruments, sutures, and sponges, and holding retractors and suctioning.
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique and report any breaks in technique.
  • Manage and secure medications in the sterile field, as per policy.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and perform interventions for patient safety.
  • Perform sponge, sharps, and instrument count according to policy.
Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist course.
  • Achieve and maintain American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification.
Working Environment

The Surgical Technician/CST works in a fast-paced environment with constant exposure to blood and/or body fluids and infection. The noise level is moderate, and the role requires frequent walking and movement.

Physical Demands
  • Occasionally required to maintain a stationary position (standing or sitting).
  • Frequently required to walk and move about.
  • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.
  • Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds.
  • Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.
