Job Title: Conductor

Canadian Pacific is seeking a Conductor to join our team. As a Conductor, you will play a critical role in the safe and efficient movement of trains across our network.

Job Summary:

The Conductor is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trains, including switching rail cars, making or splitting up trains in rail yards, and moving rail cars between rail yards. This role requires strong communication and teamwork skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Switch rail cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling devices
  • Coordinate the movement of trains, including signaling crew members for movement and maintaining a thorough understanding of and following General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR)
  • Provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in emergency situations
  • Fill out forms, including train orders and switch lists, and prepare clear and legible reports
  • Handle emergency situations and operate fire extinguishers, as well as apply first aid techniques
Requirements:
  • Must be able to perform work that can be physically demanding, including walking up to 6 miles a day on uneven ground, climbing up and down, and lifting and pulling heavy objects (up to 80 pounds on occasion)
  • Willingness to work unscheduled shift work in a 24/7 operating environment
  • Ability to report to work within a two-hour call window, after scheduled rest
  • Excellent focus, attention to detail, and ability to multitask
  • Strong communication skills, including providing clear and concise instructions/directions over radio
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for long periods of time
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) required

Training and Development:

CPKC provides 16 weeks of paid in-class and field training, providing you with a solid understanding of our safety practices, rules, and operations. You will earn $261.72 per day in classroom training and $42.90 per hour in on-the-job training.

Medical Requirements:

As this position is considered safety-critical, successful candidates are required to complete a pre-employment medical that includes a physical, vision (including accurate color vision), hearing, alcohol, and drug audit assessment. Pre-employment qualification drug test(s) are also required.

Background Investigations:

The successful candidate will need to successfully complete the following clearances: criminal history check, driver's license verification, last 3 years of driving history, last 7 years of employment history, including military service, and social security number verification.
