Water Meter Reader II Job Description

Job Title: Water Meter Reader II

Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled Water Meter Reader II to join our team at the Salt Lake City Public Utilities Department. As a Water Meter Reader II, you will be responsible for accurately reading small and large compound water meters on both residential and commercial routes. This field work requires driving and exposure to various occupational hazards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Obtain route assignments from supervisors and drive to strategic locations to read meters.
  • Locate meters, check addresses, meter locations, meter types, and numbers against information in handheld meter reading devices.
  • Enter data on corrections or hazards as needed and contact property owners for access when necessary.
  • Read consumption numbers displayed on meter registers and enter data in devices, verifying data when required.
  • Observe and report any maintenance needs, illegal connections, and abnormal consumption.
  • Answer questions from residents, shop, and business owners about meters and consumption.
  • Backtrack into routes to read meters missed earlier and perform minor maintenance tasks such as tightening connections and digging out meter boxes.
  • Maintain vehicles in clean and safe condition, including scheduling routine maintenance.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license or driving privilege card.
  • Ability to locate water meters using property descriptions or maps, read water meters, and make simple calculations when necessary.
  • Ability to work outdoors under varying weather conditions and read meters according to schedule.
  • Ability to relate well with the general public, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Six months of meter reading experience for Water Meter Reader II level.

Working Conditions: Moderately heavy physical activity, moderate exposure to disagreeable elements, and intermittent exposure to stress due to human behavior.

Career Ladder: After six months of successful performance as a Water Meter Reader I, incumbents may be advanced to Water Meter Reader II based on supervisor/manager recommendation, review by Human Resources, and Department Director approval.
