Job Summary:
The Surgical Technician internship program offers a comprehensive training experience lasting a minimum of six months. During this period, interns will work closely with a designated preceptor who will serve as a mentor and educator. Upon completion of the internship, participants will be prepared to work independently as Surgical Technicians.
The internship requires a full-time commitment, with interns expected to continue working at Weeks Medical Center for two years following graduation. Interns will also complete an online educational program.
The Surgical Technician plays a vital role in the operating room by ensuring the availability of sterile instruments and supplies during surgical procedures. This position requires maintaining a sterile environment and collaborating with surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical staff as part of the peri-operative team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and manage surgical instruments and supplies based on patient needs.
- Establish priorities and communicate effectively with team members.
- Maintain a sterile field using aseptic techniques.
- Assist surgeons during procedures by anticipating their needs.
- Participate in post-operative care, including patient transport and comfort assurance.
- Conduct accurate counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments.
- Handle surgical specimens and assist in proper labeling.
- Adhere to hospital policies and maintain confidentiality at all times.
Essential Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a high school diploma and hold current certifications as an LNA, LPN, MA, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic. Current BLS certification is required, and ACLS certification is preferred.
