About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Surgical Assistant to join our Cardiothoracic team at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida. As a key member of our surgical team, you will assist in the preparation and maintenance of the operating room environment, ensuring a safe and efficient surgical experience for our patients.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with patient positioning and transfer, utilizing proper body mechanics and monitoring patient safety.
  • Maintain current licensure and BLS certification, with written evidence on file at all times.
  • Participate in insertion of catheters and/or lines, draping and prepping of patients as needed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology as it relates to the surgical procedure and patient positioning.
  • Use proper precautions when handling sharps and instrumentation, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when scrubbed at the surgical field.
  • Assure maintenance of the sterile field until dressing are applied, x-rays are taken, and/or patient is out of the OR.
  • Anticipate surgeon's need for exposure, retracting tissues, or organs by use of one hand, minimizing tissue damage and visual obstruction to the surgeon.
  • Maintain a dry surgical field with utilization of proper suctioning techniques and appropriate electrocautery.
  • Use surgical instruments to clamp bleeding vessels, applying sponges or pressure effectively.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper care and handling of specialty instruments.
  • Maintain a neutral zone when passing sharps on the sterile fields.
  • Under the supervision of the surgeon, use ligating clips and demonstrate proper ligation and cutting of vessels.
  • Perform appropriate surgical scrub procedure according to policy.
  • Demonstrate effective knot tying techniques.
  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize sutures or staples correctly to approximate tissues.
  • Alert circulating nurses to any breaks in aseptic techniques and initiate correction as needed.
  • Maintain current licensure and BLS certification on file at all times.
  • Utilize and organize time between cases effectively to meet the department's needs.
  • Promote and participate in hospital performance improvement activities, including data collection, participation in interdisciplinary teams, and analysis and implementation of team findings.
  • Develop individual work goals annually, evaluating status of work goals throughout the year and reporting on accomplishments of goal with next annual evaluation.
Qualifications
  • Surgical Assistant Certification required.
  • BLS required.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent - Foreign Medical school graduate.
  • 1-year Surgical Assistant experience in area of specialty (Open Heart).
