Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Patient Care Technician to join our team at the University of Maryland Medical System. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will provide exceptional patient care and support to our patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the care of patients by providing routine, non-professional nursing care utilizing advanced medical and surgical skills.
  • Takes patients' vital signs, observes and communicates changes in patient conditions.
  • Requires CNA certification.
Principal Duties:
  • Provides safe, effective and efficient patient care as directed by assigned licensed nurse.
  • Assists with obtaining basic patient information as part of the nursing history or ongoing assessment and reports abnormal values to the appropriate nurse.
  • Orients patients to the care environment to promote patient comfort and safety.
  • Observes and reports obvious physical and emotional patient changes to assigned nurse.
  • Monitors patients for special risks and reports observations to assigned nurse.
  • Makes regular patient visits to provide all patients with quick response to their needs.
  • Seeks guidance and direction in prioritizing multiple demands to effectively meet patient's needs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served in the assigned work area.
  • Recognizes normal/abnormal vital sign parameters depending on age of patient.
  • Documents completely and accurately according to the unit and division standards, including safety measures.
  • Remains calm and effective in emergency situations and follows appropriate guidelines.
  • Performs and completes all assigned skills and duties as outlined care plans, critical pathways, competencies, skills lists, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates manual dexterity abilities to perform precise skills required to meet patient care needs.
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate and maneuver patient care equipment safely.
  • Initiates equipment to ensure patient safety.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use proper body mechanics to safely transfer and move patients.
  • Practices infection control procedures and observes Standard Precautions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in emergency situations.
  • Maintains area of responsibility in neat and orderly condition.
  • Stocks and returns equipment and supplies to proper storage area.
  • Reports broken and unsafe equipment to appropriate personnel.
Requirements
  • Equivalent to a High School diploma or GED; basic employment skills.
  • Requires CNA certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Equivalent to an Associate's degree (2 years college); requires knowledge and experience of a specialized field.
Communication Skills
  • Work requires the ability to understand and respond to simple written or verbal instructions.
  • Work occasionally requires contact with patients and/or visitors which involves courtesy.
  • Work requires the ability to exchange information on factual matters, schedule appointments, greet visitors, explain hospital/corporate policies, and/or relay messages to appropriate personnel.
  • Work requires the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.
  • Work requires communication skills in order to effectively deal with conflicting views or issues and mediate fair solutions or well-developed writing skills.
  • Work requires communication skills in order to persuade and negotiate with others on important matters.
Problem Solving
  • Work requires the skills to read and understand instructions, add and subtract numbers, and make comparisons between numbers and letters.
  • Work requires the analytical skills to gather and interpret data in situations in which the information or problems are relatively routine.
  • Work requires the analytical skills to identify and resolve extremely complex strategic and operational problems which require innovative solutions based on extensive, cross-functional knowledge.
