About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Veterinary Medical Specialist to join our team at the Metropolitan Government of Nashville & Davidson County. As a key member of our Animal Care and Control Shelter, you will be responsible for providing high-quality medical care to animals in our shelter's custody.

Your primary focus will be on overseeing medical care for animals in the shelter, as well as those fostered and recently placed. You will also be performing high-volume spay/neuter surgeries for domestic animals, ensuring they meet current veterinary standards of care.

About the Job

The successful candidate will have a strong background in veterinary medicine, with experience in high-volume spay/neuter and pediatric surgeries. You will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to educate staff and volunteers on animal disease and behavior.

A typical day for this role may include planning and implementing comprehensive animal health care programs, assessing and advising on treatment options for sick or injured animals, and providing emergency medical care as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement animal health care programs, including population management, environmental sanitation, and record-keeping.
  • Educate staff and volunteers on animal disease and behavior.
  • Assess and advise on treatment options for sick or injured animals.
  • Perform high-volume spay/neuter surgeries and additional surgeries as necessary.
  • Provide emergency medical care, including IV catheter placement and emergency surgery.
  • Monitor animal health, perform diagnostic procedures, and provide timely treatment when necessary.
  • Lead, direct, and train veterinary technicians, assistants, and other shelter staff.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree from an accredited university.
  • An active Tennessee license to practice veterinary medicine.
  • A DEA controlled substances registration to administer, prescribe, and dispense controlled substances.
  • Experience in high-volume spay/neuter and pediatric surgeries.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
