Job Description


A Surgical Services Technician plays a crucial role in supporting patient care and related functions within the surgical environment under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, adhering to established standards, policies, and procedures.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Engages in the planning, execution, and assessment of surgical instruments throughout the surgical process.
  • Prepares instruments, supplies, and additional materials for designated surgical procedures. Sets up the operating room in collaboration with the RN circulator, ensuring a sterile environment. Anticipates the needs of the surgical team by providing necessary instruments and equipment during the procedure.
  • Exhibits a thorough understanding of surgical asepsis and employs appropriate sterile techniques, including the maintenance of a sterile field.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with commonly performed surgical procedures, such as ophthalmology, orthopedics, general surgery, gynecology, urology, ENT, podiatry, and oral surgery, while understanding the sequence of these operations.
  • Possesses knowledge of the specific functions of surgical instruments and equipment, including proper supply utilization, counting protocols, and assisting in maintaining a clear operative field.
  • Assists the post-anesthesia care team and/or the circulating nurse as required.
  • Applies dressings correctly and aids the surgical team in transferring patients from the surgical bed.
  • Ensures proper disposal of instruments and supplies, demonstrating knowledge in cleaning and processing equipment as necessary.
  • Safeguards hospital property and supplies from damage or loss, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Understands the scope of independent practice and operates with suitable supervision.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned, including managing operating room desk functions and central sterile activities.
EDUCATION

Completion of an accredited surgical technology program.

SKILLS

Ability to meet competency requirements for the position in accordance with job descriptions and departmental standards.

CERTIFICATION

Certification must be obtained within two years of hire. CPR certification is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands: Must be in good health to stand for prolonged periods. Involves working with water, handling sharp instruments, and operating high-pressure sterilizers. Requires lifting of instrument packs and equipment. Ability to maintain composure under stress is essential.
