Job ObjectiveThe primary aim is to advocate for the mission and values of the Greene County Public Library. This role is essential in executing the strategic plan's objectives to enhance community service. As the Head of Adult Services, you will oversee departmental operations and lead the adult services team, assess collection materials, and design programs and services tailored for adults in the community.
Key Responsibilities- Design, promote, and assess library programs and services for adult patrons.
- Conduct interviews, select, and train new staff members. Supervise and evaluate team performance, providing guidance on complex issues. Facilitate staff meetings to relay information regarding policies and procedures. Address departmental challenges and encourage staff feedback.
- Contribute to the development of the library's collection by analyzing its strengths and weaknesses, selecting materials for removal, and identifying community information needs.
- Act as a representative of the Library, building relationships with community organizations and agencies.
- Deliver information and reader advisory services to the public, conducting research using both print and digital resources.
- Guide patrons and community groups in utilizing library resources and reference tools, offering both individual assistance and group presentations.
- Compile statistics, prepare reports, and complete additional projects as assigned.
- Develop and manage the departmental program and budget plan for approval and execution.
- Create displays, bibliographies, and other informational materials.
- Participate in Adult Services Council meetings and engage in system-wide adult programming initiatives.
- In the absence of the Head Librarian, may undertake supervisory responsibilities and act as the person in charge as necessary.
- Stay informed about current developments in the field through conferences, workshops, and continuing education programs.
- Maintain reliable attendance and fulfill other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Ability to foster positive relationships with the public and colleagues, demonstrating tact and courtesy.
- Proficient knowledge of digital resources and databases, with the ability to troubleshoot basic computer issues.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Capability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and address challenging situations.
- Ability to resolve routine issues under supervision while keeping the supervisor informed of departmental needs.
- A Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited institution is required. Experience in reference services, adult programming, and collection management is preferred.
- Two years of supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
This position is performed in an office-like setting, requiring considerable mobility, including light lifting, bending, and sitting at various desks and service points. Evening and weekend hours may be necessary, with schedules subject to change based on library needs.
