Job Summary

The Lead Housekeeper is responsible for supervising and assisting in the performance of general janitorial or custodial work in connection with the cleaning of a building, of an assigned area within a building, or a group of buildings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clean all hospital medical school areas, including patient rooms, operating rooms, emergency departments, isolation rooms, labs, and offices.
  • Assist in preparing work standards for the unit of responsibility.
  • Supervise employees engaged in general housekeeping tasks, select and instruct new housekeeping employees, evaluate performance, assign work, and supervise other employees of a lower grade.
  • Coordinate activities of the assigned unit to ensure effective operations and compliance with established standards.
  • Confer with management staff and others to plan and review work projects and resolve problems and exchange information.
  • Make periodic work site inspections to ensure efficient utilization of human resources and materials and compliance with established work standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of statistical records.
  • Requisition and provide materials and equipment to ensure proper service to areas of responsibility and to meet the needs of staff to perform the required tasks.
  • Communicate with departmental staff, staff from other departments or areas, and with visitors and patients in a proper manner and as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Train, coach, and assist new and established employees on refining proper procedures and area assignments.
  • Exhibit appropriate human relations skills when interacting with patients, visitors, medical center employees, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Have concern for the work area, take initiative to solve problems, and be flexible in adapting to various situations, including those of an emergency nature such as floods, fires, major spills, etc.
  • Consistently complete assignments with minimal supervision and be courteous to patients, visitors, etc.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Three years of related experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of materials, methods, and practices essential to the cleaning of buildings.
  • Considerable knowledge of types, properties, qualities, and uses of cleaning supplies and equipment, as well as their effect on various types of finishes.
  • Ability to train and instruct employees and others in cleaning and building custodial operations.
  • Maintenance of simple records and creation of reports.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions to supervise employees effectively.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of supervision.
  • Knowledge of proper care and maintenance of equipment utilized.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Ability to withstand physical strain of performing manual tasks.
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations.
