Histology Technician

Job Summary:
Under general supervision and following established procedures, receives and prepares surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for microscopic and pathological examination.
Performs standard histological procedures, including embedding, sectioning, staining, cover slipping, labeling, and operates and maintains all laboratory equipment.
Assists pathologist with gross dissection of tissue specimens, prepares chemical reagents and solutions, and files and retrieves slides, paraffin blocks, and surgical pathology reports.
Participates in training other laboratory personnel, development and implementation of new procedures, and research projects.
Responsibilities:
- Receives, logs, and performs standard histological procedures on routine surgical and autopsy tissue specimens.
- Performs advanced histotechniques in immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.
- Assists pathologist with gross dissection of tissue specimens.
- Prepares chemical reagents and solutions.
- Files and retrieves slides, paraffin blocks, and surgical pathology reports.
- Operates and maintains all laboratory equipment.
- Participates in training other laboratory personnel.
- Develops and implements new procedures and research projects.
Requirements:
- High school diploma plus two years histotechnology training, or
- Associate of Science degree or equivalent college credit hours in science plus one year histotechnology training, or
- Certificate from accredited school of histotechnology.
- Must be registered as HTL (Histotechnologist), HT (Histotechnician), or registry eligible through the ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists).
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a laboratory setting with exposure to chemicals, biological agents, and other hazardous materials.
Must be able to lift and move equipment and supplies as needed.
