Job Title: Itinerant Teacher for Students with Visual Impairments

Department: Office of Early Learning

Location: Wake County Public School System

Pay Grade: Classroom Teacher

FLSA Status: Exempt

Employment Contract Eligibility: Yes

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday (with occasional evenings and weekends)

Position Objective:
This role is dedicated to delivering specialized educational services and effective teaching strategies for students experiencing vision loss. The position requires travel within the school district to provide necessary support.

Essential Qualifications:
  • In-depth understanding of state and federal regulations, as well as educational policies related to special education.
  • Strong knowledge of braille, particularly Unified English Braille (UEB).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Google applications.
  • Familiarity with the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC).
  • Effective interpersonal skills to foster social connections within the educational community.
  • Capability to instruct K-12 students on both common core and extended content curriculum.
  • Ability to utilize diverse communication methods for instruction.
  • Skill in developing and monitoring Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students.
  • Experience in managing classroom dynamics in collaboration with other educational staff.
  • Competence in adapting the learning environment, activities, and resources to meet student needs.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, utilizing various techniques to ensure effective information exchange and collaboration.
  • Ability to create a structured and organized educational setting.
  • Experience in conducting Functional Vision and Learning Media assessments.
  • Ability to interpret medical eye reports in relation to educational contexts.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with school personnel, students, parents, and external organizations.

Education and Experience:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Special Education or a related field is required.

Certification Requirements:
Must possess or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educator's License in Visually Impaired education.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Special Education.
  • Certification in Special Education.
  • Orientation and Mobility Certification.
  • Experience with assistive technology and low vision devices.
  • Experience with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate the individual needs of each student.
  • Set measurable goals and objectives tailored to each student.
  • Assist in the development and execution of IEPs for each student.
  • Maintain accurate records and monitor student progress.
  • Provide necessary materials and training for students, staff, and families as required.
  • Submit reports promptly.
  • Engage in communication with parents and school staff.
  • Establish a regular meeting schedule with students.
  • Participate in scheduled staff and IEP meetings.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
This position operates within a school setting and routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The role may involve direct interaction with school staff, students, parents, and other service providers. The physical demands of the job are considered light, requiring the ability to exert up to ten pounds of force and frequent driving of automotive equipment.
