Job Summary

MedStar Health is seeking a highly skilled Sterile Processing Technician to join our team at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. As a Sterile Processing Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest level of patient care by processing and sterilizing medical instruments and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Decontaminate, clean, process, and sterilize medical instruments and equipment using established infection control practices.
  • Assemble instrument trays, sets, kits, and packs according to prescribed manner using content lists or set recipe as a guide.
  • Wrap packages and handle them according to standard procedure.
  • Scan trays/sets one at a time and validate containers/wrapped items to ensure all trays are properly prepared.
  • Consult with supervisor or team leader when unable to replace parts or equipment is deficient.
  • Disassemble and clean equipment such as suction machines, IV poles, and monitors using approved disinfectants, detergents, soaps, and cleaners.
  • Reassemble equipment after cleaning and operate to test for proper functioning.
  • Set all inoperable equipment to appropriate holding area for repair.
  • Dispense products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies.
  • Assign priority to emergency requests and issue them to requesting department according to established procedure.
  • Enforce/complete SPD forms for documentation or tracking purposes.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas and equipment.
  • Follow routine schedules for cleaning and maintaining equipment regularly as recommended by manufacturer.
  • Maintain safe work environment.
  • Maintain and clean shelves and work areas.
  • Apply aseptic techniques in daily work assignments.
  • Perform general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, all storage areas.
  • Maintain adequate stock and supply levels.
  • Work closely in maintaining appropriate levels of stock.
  • Assist in requisitioning/ordering of departmental supplies.
  • Perform biological and chemical monitoring.
  • Record results in appropriate log.
  • Perform visible inspection of sterilizers and report to Team Leader or Supervisor/Manager.
  • Process contaminated instruments, supplies, and equipment returned to decontamination area.
  • Check proper operation of cart washer, U/S washers, Washer Decontaminators, dryer, and dumb waiter daily, and report malfunction to team leader/manager.
  • Prioritize trays that need to be turned over with appropriate communication with team leader.
  • Receive/process loaner trays following established standard procedure.
  • Maintain inventory supplies in Decontamination area or notify appropriate personnel.
  • Manually clean power tools, scopes, and lenses and other delicate instruments.
  • Maintain clean and orderly area within shift.
  • Perform leak test on all flexible endoscopes prior to cleaning and disinfecting according to established procedure.
  • Perform water tests and record them daily, if applicable.
  • Perform routine cleaning of washers/decontaminators regularly as scheduled daily, by shift, weekly, biweekly, or monthly.
  • Sterilize instruments, equipment, utensils, and supplies using several types of sterilizers and aerators according to regulatory agencies.
  • Properly load autoclaves in prescribed manner and set controls to specified time and temperature according to manufacturer's recommendation.
  • Complete appropriate documentation records prior to sterilization.
  • Read, mark, and initial autoclave printout to verify appropriate sterilization cycle and to provide records for verification.
  • Inspect items sterilized prior to sending/receiving to appropriate department or area by checking locks, indicators/tapes to assure integrity of sterilized sets/trays.
  • Clean sterilizer strainer and rinse under running water until debris is removed daily and every shift or as often as needed.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 6 months related experience or Completion of the central service technician course.
  • Must prepare for certification for Sterile Processing within 1 year of hire.
  • Sterile Processing certification complete the certification within 2 years of hire.
