Child Advocacy Specialist and Trauma Counselor

Position Summary:

The Child Advocacy Specialist / Trauma Counselor position encompasses two primary responsibilities at the CAC. The advocacy component focuses on fostering a child-centered, supportive atmosphere for children and families involved in child abuse investigations or those who have witnessed traumatic events. This aspect will constitute approximately 75% of the role. The trauma counseling segment involves providing therapeutic services to children who have endured psychological trauma and their families, making up the remaining 25% of the position.

Key Responsibilities:

Advocacy Functions:

  • Deliver crisis support to families engaged with the CAC, including welcoming families, clarifying the CAC's role in investigations, and assisting non-offending caregivers during interviews.
  • Manage a caseload of advocacy cases, ensuring ongoing communication and support throughout the duration of the case.
  • Utilize crisis assessment tools to evaluate risk and safety, addressing the unique needs of children and their caregivers.
  • Assist families in accessing essential services such as housing, protective orders, and public assistance.
  • Keep families informed about case developments, including court proceedings and related updates.
  • Provide educational support regarding court processes and accompany families during medical examinations.
  • Engage in initial and ongoing training in advocacy and child maltreatment.
  • Participate in regular supervision with the CAC Program Manager.
  • Be available for after-hours urgent advocacy needs on a rotating basis.

Trauma Counseling Functions:

  • Offer trauma-informed outpatient psychological services, including assessments and both short- and long-term therapy for children affected by trauma.
  • Complete required training in evidence-based mental health treatments for children who have experienced trauma.
  • Collaborate with other clinical services as necessary.
  • Refer families to additional clinical resources when appropriate.
  • Engage in weekly clinical supervision with a qualified supervisor.

Administrative Duties:

  • Maintain accurate records of advocacy services and case documentation.
  • Complete necessary clinical assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes in a timely manner.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to promote collaboration and accountability.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Master's degree in psychology, social work, or a related field is required.
  • Experience: A minimum of two years in child abuse investigation or related fields is preferred.
  • Licensure: LCSW, LCPC, or Licensed Clinical Psychologist credentials are mandatory.
  • Skills: Familiarity with child protection laws and systems is essential. Bilingual candidates (Spanish/English) are preferred.
  • CPR Certification: Must possess a valid certification from an accredited organization.
