Position Summary:

Under the guidance and oversight of a Speech and Language Pathologist, the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) plays a crucial role in enhancing and extending speech/language therapy services. This includes engaging in various tasks such as conducting direct activities with students aimed at developing pre-language and language skills, facilitating oral-motor control for speech production, and utilizing assistive technology devices for communication. The SLPA serves students with identified speech and language disorders, who may also have additional disabilities. This is a 10-month position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Conducts speech and language screenings without interpretation, utilizing protocols established by the supervising Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP).
2. Provides direct support for speech, language, voice, fluency, and hearing to students under the supervision of the SLP.
3. Implements documented IEP plans or protocols and tracks student progress towards established objectives, reporting findings to the SLP.
4. Assists the SLP during assessments, including formal documentation, material preparation, and clerical tasks.
5. Prepares therapy materials and/or equipment for classroom and therapy activities.
6. Adapts instructional materials and/or equipment based on student needs and abilities for teacher use.
7. Maintains student records, compiles data, and prepares charts, records, graphs, and reports.
8. Organizes classroom activities, displays educational materials, and arranges furniture to support instructional requirements.
9. May implement behavior management programs for students as designed by certified staff, observing and reporting significant student behavior and patterns to the SLP.

Note: The Speech and Language Assistant is not authorized to conduct evaluations, interpret data, modify IEP plans, or perform any tasks without the explicit knowledge and approval of the supervising SLP.

Employment Standards:

Education and Experience:

Associate degree and/or completion of a Speech-Language Pathology assistant certificate program, or a Bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders with a minimum of 70 hours of fieldwork/clinical experience from a Board-approved program.

Licenses and Certificates:

Must possess a valid license from the Arizona Department of Health Services at the time of appointment and maintain current licensure throughout employment in this classification.

  • Normal speech, language, and hearing development;
  • Language disorders and rehabilitation;
  • Articulation disorders and rehabilitation;
  • Acquired disorders and rehabilitation;
  • Learning patterns in children;
  • Student behavior management techniques and strategies;
  • Learning challenges of children with special education needs;
  • English usage, punctuation, spelling, grammar, and math;
  • Routine recordkeeping.
Ability to:
  • Assist speech and language therapists with the implementation of IEPs;
  • Effectively manage student attitudes and behaviors;
  • Communicate effectively and tactfully in both oral and written forms;
  • Utilize time management skills efficiently;
  • Demonstrate appropriate professional conduct;
  • Select, prepare, and present educational materials effectively;
  • Maintain documentation of student progress;
  • Employ various screening tools and protocols, managing screenings and documentation;
  • Provide effective implementation of therapy objectives;
  • Operate instructional and office equipment;
  • Perform basic math to compile reports and maintain records;
  • Interact successfully with parents, students, supervisors, school staff, and community agency representatives;
  • Modify or differentiate lessons to meet students' needs and progress with guidance from the SLP;
  • Consult with supervisors when students' progress is inconsistent;
  • Develop and monitor carry-over activities with classroom teachers and at home;
  • Create and provide engaging, appropriate lessons/materials to ensure progress towards student IEP goals;
  • Support Regular Education Teachers with pre-teach and re-teach strategies for successful inclusion and IEP goals;
  • Work with students individually and in small groups;
  • Establish schedules for student services that align with current IEP services.
