POSITION SUMMARY: The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides essential medical support under the guidance of healthcare professionals for patients within the oncology clinic. This role is crucial for managing administrative tasks that allow physicians to focus on patient care.
REPORTING STRUCTURE: This position reports directly to the Director of the clinic.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:The responsibilities of this role encompass, but are not limited to:
- Assisting physicians with accurate documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to facilitate prompt dictation and billing processes.
- Collecting and recording comprehensive patient health information, including medical history, physical examinations, diagnostic results, and educational materials, ensuring meticulous attention to detail.
- Observing patient interactions and accurately documenting clinical events and decision-making processes for effective medical record-keeping.
- Facilitating the electronic processing of physician orders for diagnostic imaging, laboratory tests, and medication prescriptions within the EHR.
- Adhering to all relevant policies and regulations regarding medical scribing.
- Demonstrating proficient keyboarding skills.
- Participating in mandatory meetings and contributing to committees as needed.
- Engaging in ongoing professional development and maintaining relevant professional affiliations.
- Completing department-specific tasks as required.
- Complying with all applicable regulatory policies and procedures.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: A solid understanding of medical practices and patient care is essential. Familiarity with examination procedures, diagnostic protocols, and treatment room operations is required. The candidate should possess knowledge of safety hazards and precautions to maintain a secure work environment. Skills in assisting with various treatments and medications, taking vital signs, and maintaining accurate records are crucial. The ability to foster effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public is necessary, along with the capacity to maintain quality control standards and respond effectively in emergencies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This role requires a full range of motion, including the ability to lift and handle patients, as well as manual dexterity and coordination. The position involves prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking, with occasional lifting of items weighing up to 100 pounds. Vision and hearing must be within normal ranges, and the candidate should be prepared to work under stressful conditions or irregular hours, with potential exposure to communicable diseases.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position may involve exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions typical of a clinical setting.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: The LPN must demonstrate knowledge of medical practices and patient care, with a focus on examinations and diagnostic procedures. The individual should exhibit tact, understanding, and empathy in patient interactions. The ability to identify serious issues during patient triage and utilize available resources effectively is essential. Knowledge of record-keeping requirements, both medical and administrative, is necessary.PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY: The role requires sound judgment when interacting with diverse patient and staff personalities. Duties are generally performed within established policies and guidelines, with the ability to work independently or under direct supervision as needed. Complex issues may be referred to supervisory personnel.
ACCOUNTABILITY: The LPN is accountable for the care provided to patients and must adhere strictly to physician instructions. Maintaining a friendly and cooperative demeanor with patients is essential, along with making informed decisions regarding the urgency of patient concerns and consulting physicians promptly when necessary. Responsible use of supplies and materials is expected, with an emphasis on minimizing waste.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Completion of an accredited LPN program and possession of an active state license are required.
EXPERIENCE: No prior experience is necessary.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: A valid LPN license from the state is required.
