Job Title: OPS Veterinarian Assistant

Job Summary:

The OPS Veterinarian Assistant will assist the veterinary and administrative staff in enforcing the Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering and the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) regulations, standards, procedures, and chain-of-custody protocols at regulated pari-mutuel facilities in Broward County, Florida.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect specimen samples from racing animals following strict chain-of-custody procedures to ensure evidential integrity of test results.
  • Ensure a safe, secure, and healthy detention barn work environment by following chain-of-custody protocols and monitoring and enforcing detention barn area security, sanitation, and safety regulations.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with applicable Florida rules relating to the detention and handling of horses at licensed racetrack facilities.
  • Maintain detention barn stalls and barn area to ensure they are always clean and free of safety hazards.
  • Verify document identification of horses designated for specimen collection.
  • Escort designated horses from the finish line to the detention barn for the purpose of facilitating specimen collection.
  • Collection of biological specimens that must be subsequently shipped offsite for comprehensive testing.
  • Ensure compliance with biological specimen collection, documentation, storage, shipping and chain-of–custody procedures.
  • Ensure that racehorses are treated properly and humanely by observing the behavior of animals, trainers, and other personnel within the detention barn area and reporting recognized anomalies to supervisor.
  • Assist the designated OPS security attendant in maintaining Detention Barn Area security.
  • May be required to participate in hearings or depositions, as to the nature of specific biological specimen collection efforts, and associated documentation related to a specific racehorse or horses.
  • Contributes to overall team effort by completing other related assignments and responsibilities that are reasonably assigned from time to time by supervisor, or designee.

  • Ability to maintain strong positive relationships with colleagues and get along with diverse personalities.
  • Incumbent must comprehensively understand, and consistently apply the provisions of Chapter 550, Florida Statutes, and Section 75, Florida Administrative Code each scheduled workday.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos and to occasionally write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment and balance team and individual responsibilities.
  • Incumbent must consistently comply with all employer safety, security, and chain-of-custody protocols.
  • Incumbent is expected to be conscientious, dependable, punctual, and available to work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings; work flexible schedules as needed; work occasional evenings and/or nights; work overtime on short notice as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Verifiable experience and/or training; or a combination of extensive education and experience in the Florida regulated thoroughbred industry or a similar jurisdiction.
