Job Summary

As a key member of our environmental services department, you will be responsible for performing hazardous materials management activities at our solid waste facility and satellite locations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform daily handling of chemicals and hazardous materials, and frequent use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist in the event of a natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, and perform emergency duties as directed.
  • Greets and assists persons delivering hazardous materials and removes materials from vehicles.
  • Uses chemical knowledge to segregate materials and prepares wastes for shipment, and or storage.
  • Processes waste paint, waste oil, assorted chemicals, batteries, and electronics.
  • Maintains cleanliness of facility and equipment.
  • Practices good housekeeping at all times.
  • Transports materials from collection satellites to main facility.
  • Inspects and maintains satellite collection sites and equipment.
  • Prepares periodic technical reports related to collection and facility operations as needed.
  • Performs weekly and periodic inspections of facilities and safety equipment to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Sorts and manages compressed gas cylinders (i.e. Freon, propane).
  • Vents or extracts gases according to established safety procedures, and rules.
  • Conducts load inspections at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility in compliance with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act subtitle D regulations.
  • Assists with responses to hazardous materials spills and incidents at Solid Waste Transfer Facility, Household Hazardous Waste Facility, and or satellite locations.
  • Mitigates hazardous materials.
  • Provides technical guidance to the public and other agencies on disposal of special wastes and other hazardous waste management related information within scope of knowledge.
  • Characterizes and profiles waste streams for contractor disposal.
  • Acts as on-site contact for disposal vendors as needed. Schedules and coordinates disposal activities.
  • Assists in determining facility and equipment needs.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies needed and submits list of needed supplies to supervisor weekly.
  • Assists in community events, promoting Household Hazardous Waste disposal.
  • Makes recommendations that impact the budget.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Some experience handling of materials of solid waste or hazardous items is preferred.
  • Prior experience in material handling, solid waste management, industrial cleaning, or hazardous items can be used as a substitute.
  • Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Must possess an OSHA 40-hour Hazardous Materials Site Worker certificate within one year of hire date.
  • Must possess a forklift certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.
