Responsibilities

The Department of Pediatrics at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine is seeking a board-certified/board-eligible physician in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology to enhance the educational experience for residents and medical students in an outpatient environment.

The Department serves as the primary pediatric referral center for the region. Responsibilities include patient care at our dedicated children's hospital.

Providing a high-quality educational and training experience for medical students and residents is a key departmental objective.

Appointment level is flexible and will be determined based on training, experience, and scholarly contributions. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package.

Duties include:

EDUCATION:
Conduct didactic lectures and grand rounds for medical students, pediatric residents, faculty, and nursing staff. Teach pediatric medicine within the established curriculum at the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine. Prepare and deliver lectures to graduate medical students. Utilize various teaching methods, including lectures and demonstrations, to instruct graduate medical students. Compile bibliographies of specialized reading materials for outside assignments.

CLINICAL EDUCATION:
Provide clinical instruction in the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology clinic and inpatient settings for pediatric residents, nurses, medical students, physician assistant students, and pharmacy students.

Guide the pediatric hematology and oncology team (including nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and laboratory staff) in managing patients admitted to the service.

This involves reviewing disease characteristics, therapy strategies, and performing pediatric procedures such as bone marrow aspirations, biopsies, lumbar punctures, and chemotherapy administration.

Instruct and mentor pediatric residents on evidence-based approaches to diagnosing and managing patients, focusing on disease and treatment-related outcomes.


RESEARCH:
Supervise medical students and pediatric residents in research planning and execution while pursuing advanced academic degrees. Mentor students in ethical and effective research methodologies.

Engage in research within pediatric hematology and oncology to deepen understanding of disease pathology, complications, and therapeutic outcomes in children.

Work towards developing new treatments for hematology and oncology patients to reduce mortality and complications associated with severe illnesses in children.

Present research findings at national and international conferences and publish results in professional journals.


CLINICAL PATIENT CARE:
Diagnose and treat pediatric patients with critical conditions such as cancer (leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, kidney tumors), sickle cell disease, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and life-threatening infections.

Conduct examinations to assess disease presence, order and interpret laboratory and imaging tests, and analyze results to diagnose conditions.

Administer and prescribe treatments for critically ill pediatric patients. Educate families on preventive and therapeutic care for their sick children, providing guidance on managing children undergoing chemotherapy or frequent blood transfusions.


ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:
Ensure effective organization and structure within the pediatric hematology and oncology administrative division, overseeing outpatient and inpatient care to deliver optimal healthcare services.

Assist in establishing and managing a sickle cell registry for the local community. Participate in multidisciplinary committees at the children's hospital.

Collaborate with the Department of Pediatrics and the Whiddon College of Medicine on various teams and committees that shape research and educational policies and procedures.
