Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Locomotive Operator to join our team at Harsco Environmental. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating locomotives to switch cars, load and unload scrap metal, and perform various tasks in the yard.

Responsibilities
  • Operate locomotives to switch cars, load and unload scrap metal, and perform various tasks in the yard.
  • Engage and disengage track switches to switch cars for loading, unloading, making up or breaking up of trains.
  • Manually knuckle and un-knuckle rail cars.
  • Communicate with locomotive operators through hand signals and/or two-way radio.
  • Assist locomotive operators in driving switching locomotives within the plant for loading and unloading of scrap metals and/or product.
  • Inspect each load of scrap and pick up nonferrous material.
  • Observe traffic signals in the yard and operate locomotives in accordance with SSAB Policy and Procedures.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance on locomotives, cranes, and mobile equipment and log all problems/services performed.
  • Communicate with other departments/co-workers requiring service through two-way radio and hand signals.
  • Climb on and off rail cars to inspect loads.
  • Assist in re-railing derailed rail cars.
  • Assist with maintenance during downtime.
  • Assist in training of co-workers as needed.
  • Operate hand torch to cut scrap.
  • Participate in daily housekeeping for a safe work environment.
  • Operate scale system via computer.
  • Assure all trucks and/or railcars to be weighed are identified, weighed, and logged.
  • Perform visual inspection of vendor scrap to confirm grades of different types of raw materials.
  • Direct loads to proper inventory pile location.
  • Maintain weigh ticket files.
  • Monitor weigh-tickets for accuracy of inventory movement charge numbers.
  • Monitor functions and accuracy of scale and related systems.
  • Report raw material problems to Scrap Processing Department.
  • Assist facilitators and co-workers in scale operations and/or training.
  • Downgrade as appropriate with production supervisor.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Assist with maintenance/clean-up as needed.
  • Clean switch stands and remove snow and ice when necessary.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years' experience as a crane/heavy equipment operator is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a steel mill environment, which may include dust and extreme weather conditions, and uneven surfaces.
  • Good communication skills, and the ability to read operating instructions.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, reach, squat, tolerate prolonged standing/walking, balance, bend from trunk, walk up inclines, operate mobile equipment, crawl, kneel, push/pull objects.
  • Ability to operate hand controls with both hands.
  • Ability to operate foot pedals with both feet.
  • Have sufficient neck range of motion (flexion/extension 60 degrees, lateral flexion 40 degrees, rotation 70 degrees).
  • Ability to tolerate working in cramped quarters and heights.
  • Ability to swing a 10 lb. sledgehammer repetitively.
  • Ability to tolerate working in all environmental weather conditions.
