Job Description

Responsibilities:

  1. Engage and disengage track switches to switch cars for loading, unloading, making up or breaking up of trains.
  2. Manually knuckles and un-knuckles rail cars.
  3. Communicates with locomotive operator through hand signals and/or two- way radio.
  4. May assist locomotive operator in driving switching locomotive within the plant for loading and unloading of scrap metals and/or product.
  5. Inspects each load of scrap and picks up nonferrous material.
  6. Observes traffic signals in the yard and operates locomotive in accordance with SSAB Policy and Procedures.
  7. Performs daily preventative maintenance on locomotive, crane and mobile equipment and logs all problems/services performed to include fueling and checking fluid levels.
  8. Communicates with other departments/co-workers requiring service through two-way radio and hand signals.
  9. Climbs on and off rail cars to inspect load.
  10. Assists in re-railing derailed rail cars.
  11. Assists with maintenance during down time.
  12. Assists in training of co-workers as needed.
  13. Operates hand torch to cut scrap.
  14. Participates in daily housekeeping for a safe work environment.
  15. Operates scale system via computer.
  16. Assures all trucks and/or railcars to be weighed are identified, weighed, and logged.
  17. Performs visual inspection of vendor scrap to confirm grades of different types of raw materials.
  18. Directs loads to proper inventory pile location.
  19. Maintains weigh ticket files.
  20. Monitor weigh- tickets for accuracy of inventory movement charge numbers.
  21. Monitor functions and accuracy of scale and related systems.
  22. Report raw material problems to Scrap Processing Department.
  23. Assists Facilitators and co-workers in scale operations and/or training.
  24. Downgrades as appropriate with production supervisor.
  25. Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  26. Assist with maintenance/clean-up as needed.
  27. Performs other duties as assigned.
  28. Cleaning switch stands and removing snow and ice when necessary

Qualifications

 

  •  High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 - 3 years’ experience as a crane/heavy equipment operator is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a steel mill environment, which may include dust and extreme weather conditions, and uneven surfaces.
  • Good communications skills, and the ability to read operating instructions                                                                                                                               Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, reach, squat, tolerate prolonged standing/walking, balance, bend from trunk, walk up inclines, operate mobile equipment, crawl, kneel, push/pull objects.
  • Ability to operate hand controls with both hands.
  • Ability to operate foot pedals with both feet.
  • Have sufficient neck range of motion (flexion/extension 60 degrees, lateral flexion 40 degrees, rotation 70 degrees.)
  • Ability to tolerate working in cramped quarters and heights.
  • Ability to swing a 10 lb. sledgehammer repetitively.
  • Ability to tolerate working in all environmental weather conditions.

Vision:    Normal depth perception, normal (correctable) vision and ability to distinguish color.                                                                                       

Personal Protective Equipment: 

Required: Hard hat, steel toe boots with metatarsal protection, safety glasses, gloves, hard hat, and flame-retardant uniform.
