Job Summary

The Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA/CSFA) plays a vital role in the surgical team, working as a 1st or 2nd assistant to the surgeon and under their direction and supervision. This position requires a high level of skill and attention to detail, with responsibilities before, during, and after the surgical procedure.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, setting up tables, and positioning equipment
  • Provide retraction for visualization of the surgical site, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incisions, instillation of medications, and application of surgical dressings, splints, and casts
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and use effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes
Requirements:
  • Graduate of CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited Surgical Assistant Program required
  • Must obtain Certified Surgical First Assistant or Certified Surgical Assistant certification within 6 months of hire if not available at hire
  • All current Virginia SAs and applicants must be certified and licensed through the Virginia Board of Medicine
