Job Title: Intern - Controls and Data Systems Engineering

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University is seeking an Intern - Controls and Data Systems Engineering to join our team. As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies for next-generation scientific facilities.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as an Intern - Controls and Data Systems Engineering. The successful candidate will have a strong background in engineering, physics, or a related field, and will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of control systems for our scientific facilities.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the design, development, and implementation of control systems for our scientific facilities.
  • Work with our team to develop and implement software solutions for automation engineering, experiment operations, and other disciplines.
  • Collaborate with other team members and international groups on public software packages on GitHub, including the review of peer-submitted code.
  • Participate in upgrades to, and new designs involving, PLC controls & automation systems for vacuum systems, DC power systems, facility monitoring, pneumatics, cooling, fieldbus networks, mechatronic systems, and similar.
  • Support test and checkout processes, ensure test procedures are prepared and ready, assist with quality assurance throughout the process.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in physical sciences, computing, an engineering field such as mechatronics, electronics, or related STEM field.
  • Ability to learn and understand the workings of a broad range of hardware and software.
  • Exceptional communications skills and ability to work well in a research and development team.
  • Demonstrated project leadership, planning, and excellent organizational skills.
  • Effective communication with external vendors of equipment and/or services, for purposes of purchasing, outsourcing, or support.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in highly technical applications, and a demonstrated ability of independent decision making.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Familiarity with Python, bash, C/C++, or ST.
  • Some experience with the design, manufacturing, assembly, and installation of instrumentation, components, and control devices and systems.
Working Conditions:

This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt student position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more), not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization.
