Position Overview:
The Clinical Cytology Specialist plays a crucial role in identifying, differentiating, and diagnosing diseases through the analysis of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens. This position supports the Pathologist in various procedures, including fine needle aspirates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts detailed microscopic evaluations of gynecological and non-gynecological samples, accurately identifying and differentiating cellular structures based on established cytological standards.
- Selects and marks cells that are indicative of pathological conditions, preparing preliminary diagnoses for cases that require further review by the cytology supervisor or pathologist.
- Assesses the acceptability of specimens submitted for analysis, effectively communicating specimen collection and transport protocols to relevant healthcare providers to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures.
- Aids in the collection of Fine Needle Aspirates, adhering to established protocols.
- Demonstrates initiative and critical thinking in addressing quality control issues, promptly notifying supervisory personnel and documenting all actions taken.
- Utilizes technology for data management and retrieval in daily operations.
- Compiles final diagnoses using recognized cytological terminology for specimens deemed within normal limits.
- Responsible for accessioning, routine staining, and coverslipping of cytological slides.
- Ensures accurate specimen identification throughout the analytical process.
- Performs additional duties as required to fulfill departmental and organizational needs.
Certification Requirements:
- Cytotechnologist (CT) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required within the first year of employment.
- Candidates must meet CLIA education and experience standards for Cytotechnologists.
- An official transcript and/or diploma must be maintained on file to meet CLIA requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A minimum of one year of relevant experience is preferred.
