The ideal candidate is a proactive individual with a keen eye for detail, capable of making informed decisions, fostering strong relationships, and influencing a diverse range of stakeholders to support the mission of APS Publications.
Key Responsibilities
The Associate Managing Editor will be instrumental in shaping the strategic vision for a designated group of APS journals, consistently aiming to elevate the visibility of the assigned journal portfolio within the scientific community. This role involves collaboration with various stakeholders to evaluate, define, and oversee the execution of strategic initiatives that will drive journal growth.
In this position, the Associate Managing Editor will employ strategic thinking, showcase creativity, and effectively communicate innovative ideas. Collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editors, Editorial Board, and the APS publications team is essential, alongside a thorough understanding of the peer review process to ensure a premier experience for authors, reviewers, and editors alike.
The Associate Managing Editor will also proactively introduce fresh concepts aimed at enhancing journal offerings. This includes working with the editorial team and Guest Editors to pinpoint emerging research areas and develop Calls for Papers and content collections. Additionally, the role involves close collaboration with the editorial team to manage commissioned content and working alongside the marketing department to curate social media content for journals, which includes crafting posts for various platforms and analyzing social media metrics.
Project Management
The Associate Managing Editor will oversee related workflows to guarantee the timely and precise delivery of high-quality publications. Responsibilities include monitoring journal performance, tracking Associate Editor and Editorial Board activities, organizing meetings with the editorial team, and representing the journal at both in-person and virtual conferences. The role also entails producing presentations and reports, monitoring collections and citations, conducting training for new Associate Editors, and collaborating with editors to recruit new Editorial Board Members.
Furthermore, the Associate Managing Editor will manage special projects and initiatives, which may include producing journal-specific podcasts and facilitating the development of early career researcher reviewers.
Qualifications
- Experience in scholarly publishing, particularly within a scientific or medical context;
- Understanding of editorial processes and scientific peer review;
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills for diverse audiences, including strong presentation and collaboration abilities;
- Excellent organizational skills to manage both daily tasks and long-term projects;
- Proficient in prioritizing tasks to meet tight deadlines while working with cross-functional teams;
- Strong analytical skills, particularly regarding journal and editorial team performance metrics;
- Familiarity with peer review management and team collaboration platforms;
- Experience in social media engagement to connect with the journal community;
- Highly motivated with strong networking skills and editorial insight;
- Commitment to supporting the APS mission: empowering discovery to enhance health.
