Description

In this role, you will be responsible for performing vital communication tasks within the Emergency Communications Center of the Police Department during assigned shifts. Your primary duties will include managing all incoming calls on both administrative and emergency lines for the Police Department, Fire Department, and rescue services. You will also operate a computer terminal linked to the Virginia Criminal Information Network and the National Crime Information Center. It is essential to demonstrate a high level of tact and firmness while gathering information from individuals in distress. You will need to exercise independent judgment and initiative when receiving messages, collecting information, and responding to urgent situations. You will report directly to the Communications Lead Operator and are expected to successfully complete the probationary period.

Key Responsibilities
  • Utilize a TTY system through the VESTA phone system to receive and transmit messages; respond to complaints and service requests; gather necessary information; and input relevant data into the computer system.
  • Alert other agencies as needed to assist Police, Fire, and Rescue during emergencies.
  • Operate a computer terminal connected to the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) to access information such as driver’s history, vehicle registration, criminal records, and stolen property data.
  • Input data regarding stolen property or wanted individuals and send necessary messages nationwide.
  • Maintain and log all complaints and service requests in the City’s computer database; retrieve this data as authorized; monitor security alarms for various establishments; and keep track of the location of City vehicles.
  • Answer phone calls; respond to inquiries and provide information or refer inquiries to the appropriate personnel, departments, or agencies.
  • Perform various clerical tasks as required.
  • Generate call history information for officers.
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is required. Certification in CPR, EMD, VCIN/NCIC operation, and basic dispatching is necessary or must be obtained.

Additional Information

Familiarity with the policies, procedures, and practices of the City and departmental operations relevant to the Call Taker position is essential. Knowledge of terminology, principles, and methods used within the department is important. You should be able to stay updated on any changes in policies, methods, and administrative updates related to departmental operations.

Proficiency with computers and software commonly used in this role is required. You must be able to read, understand, and interpret technical reports and related materials.

Strong communication skills are necessary to effectively interact with department employees, supervisors, and the public. You should be able to compile information and create written reports in a clear and concise manner.

Additionally, you must possess the ability to exercise independent judgment and work with minimal supervision when necessary.

Knowledge of basic mathematical methods for performing calculations is required. You should be able to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and analyze data while exercising discretion in determining data classification.

Finally, the ability to read a variety of reports and documentation, write reports with proper format, and communicate effectively is essential for success in this role.
