Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Staff Attorney to join our team at Florida Rural Legal Services. As a Staff Attorney, you will play a critical role in providing civil legal assistance to indigent persons in Florida.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview and certify eligibility of clients, identifying their legal problems and providing appropriate legal assistance.
  • Participate in community outreach and education, promoting the mission and services of Florida Rural Legal Services.
  • Represent clients in court and before administrative agencies, advocating for their rights and interests.
  • Provide documentation, statistical information, and other records as required by the Managing Attorney, Deputy Director, or Executive Director.
  • Participate in case acceptance meetings, collaborating with colleagues to ensure effective case management.
  • Stay up-to-date with Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements and participate in training to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic, excellent time management skills, and a commitment to treating clients and staff with courtesy and respect.
  • Serve as a role model, promoting the values of hard work, high-quality advocacy, and respect for others.
  • Ensure accessibility of the local office(s) by serving clients with diverse needs, including rural clients, non-English speaking clients, and clients with disabilities.
  • Promote good relations with the public, including client groups, service providers, press, and private bars, attending and speaking at local meetings as appropriate.
  • Familiarize yourself with Florida Rural Legal Services policies, as well as requirements of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and other funders, adhering to those policies and requirements.
  • Maintain an accurate follow-up system to review cases when needed.
Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school.
  • Barred in Florida.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal court practices.
  • Some knowledge of the legal system, commitment to the mission of Florida Rural Legal Services, and compassion for clients.
  • Ability to forge positive relationships with prospects and colleagues.
  • Good organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, yet independently.
  • Must be able to effectively and efficiently maximize existing resources.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Bilingual Spanish/Haitian Creole preferred, but not required.

This is a largely sedentary role, however, some lifting of office supplies of up to 20 pounds may be required. Must be able to travel throughout Florida, as needed.
