Position: Group Exercise Instructor

Salary: Starting at $20/hour

Under the guidance of the Executive Director, the Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for delivering engaging and effective fitness classes that foster comprehensive wellness for participants.

The instructor will:

  • Welcome all participants by name whenever feasible, expressing gratitude and prioritizing relationship building.
  • Conduct group exercise sessions in accordance with the YMCA of Greater Hartford's Program Quality Guidelines, tailored to the specific class format.
  • Enhance personal knowledge by attending at least one YMCA training or other approved health and fitness workshops annually.
  • Oversee class participants to ensure a safe environment and promptly report any concerns to the supervisor.
  • Distribute necessary materials, updates, and feedback forms to participants as directed.
  • Engage with new members, addressing their inquiries and providing information about YMCA programs.
  • Stay informed about current branch offerings and share insights with members and the community.
  • Represent the YMCA professionally at all times.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, offering assistance as needed.
  • Be accessible to all members, regardless of their background or fitness level, and serve as a knowledgeable resource for health and fitness.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the exercise studio and equipment, reporting any issues to the Wellness staff.
  • Be familiar with emergency protocols and respond appropriately.
  • Exhibit good attendance and provide at least two weeks' notice for any schedule changes.
  • Take responsibility for arranging qualified substitutes when necessary and inform the supervisor accordingly.
  • Allocate at least ten minutes for class preparation and five minutes post-class for member interaction.
  • Arrive well-groomed and in appropriate attire for each class.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings.
  • Ensure that no products or services outside of YMCA programs are promoted to members or guests.
  • Maintain current CPR certifications and meet Association Pre-Practicum standards.
  • Possess national certification in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
  • Hold certifications in specialized areas of expertise.
  • Preferably have at least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes.
  • Complete the Group Exercise Pre-Hire Practicum.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for the duration of the shift.
  • Occasional bending and stooping.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
