Position Overview:
The University of Iowa is seeking an Environmental Testing Specialist to join our dedicated team. This role involves conducting both routine and specialized microbiological assessments on various environmental samples, including water, sludge, food, and surfaces, utilizing established methodologies and ensuring adherence to quality control protocols.

Key Responsibilities:
• Perform microbiological analyses on environmental samples, ensuring compliance with approved testing methods.
• Provide accurate documentation and quality control measures throughout the testing process.
• Address inquiries from the public and health department representatives regarding testing outcomes and sample collection protocols.

Work Schedule:
• Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• Availability for holiday shifts, rotating weekends, and on-call duties is required.

Location:
• This position is based on-site at the University of Iowa.

Employment Type:
• This is a 2-year specified term position.

Qualifications:
Required Education:
A bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, or a related biological science field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Skills:
• Strong teamwork and interpersonal abilities, fostering effective relationships within and outside the laboratory.
• Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in basic mathematics, computer applications, and Microsoft Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in documenting and reviewing routine data and reports, ensuring quality control.
• Familiarity with bacteriology testing procedures for water or food samples, including quality control measures.
• Understanding of Environmental Microbiology testing, including coliform bacteria and food pathogen analysis.

Desirable Skills:
• Experience with bacterial culture and isolation techniques.
• Knowledge of molecular techniques such as RT-PCR and DNA sequencing.
