Job Summary

The Transit Parts and Service Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Transit Maintenance team by performing technical and administrative tasks related to parts and supplies management, inventory control, and report preparation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Unload new inventory from freight trucks and verify consistency with packing slips
  • Operate forklifts and pallet jacks to load or unload large shipments of parts and equipment
  • Assist sales vendors and delivery personnel at Blacksburg Transit
  • Order and receive parts from vendors as needed
  • Manage inventory, including barcoding and stocking supplies, updating inventory, equipment, fuel, supplies, or other material counts as needed
  • Assist maintenance staff with dropping off and picking up vehicles being repaired
  • Assist with packing products and shipping out for repairs or returns to vendors
  • Research parts via electronic/hard copy manuals
  • Issue parts to mechanics
  • Assist with preparing documentation for surplus items
  • Complete various forms, reports, maintenance records, or other documents
  • Receive and distribute Blacksburg Transit department packages
  • Maintain and update information on chemical SDS sites for Blacksburg Transit locations on the current SDS Management system
Requirements
  • General knowledge of automotive equipment
  • General knowledge of inventory procedures
  • General knowledge of business mathematics
  • General knowledge of standard office equipment
  • Must possess basic computer skills
Education and Experience
  • Must be 19 years or older
  • High School Diploma or GED Certification required
Special Requirements
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within 6 months of employment a valid Commercial Driver's License (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement in Virginia with a satisfactory driving record)
  • This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the Federal Transit Administration and the US Department of Transportation in 49 CFR Part 40, and Part 655, as amended
  • A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position
  • Drug and alcohol testing guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration will be followed during the employment period
Physical Requirements
  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, and repetitive motions
  • Frequently requires standing, walking, speaking, or hearing, and lifting, and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and pushing or pulling
  • Work has standard vision requirements
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities
  • Work frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic)
