Job Summary

A Varsity Softball Coach is responsible for organizing and training a team of student-athletes to compete at the highest level. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the game, excellent communication skills, and the ability to motivate and inspire their team.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and communicate clear goals and expectations for the team and individual players.
  • Maintain open and honest communication with students, parents, and other coaches.
  • Develop and demonstrate a strong knowledge base of best practices in softball coaching.
  • Support and collaborate with coaches in other athletic programs.
  • Model and teach skills necessary for success in the sport.
  • Support student academic expectations and achievements.
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of Grand Rapids Public Schools policies and procedures.
  • Promote and enforce the student-athlete code of conduct.
  • Connect athletic experiences with life experiences.
  • Provide a positive and supportive team environment.
  • Become an integral part of the Grand Rapids community.
  • Model good sportsmanship at all times.
  • Create and maintain a safe and healthy environment for student-athletes.
  • Understand leadership style and its impact on student-athletes.
  • Wear professional and appropriate game and practice attire.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and clear a criminal background check.
  • Playing experience at the high school or college level and/or coaching experience required.
  • Proof of current First Aid and CPR certifications prior to the first day of coaching.
  • Must provide certificate of completion for online concussion training course from either the Centers for Disease Control or the National Federation of State High School Associations prior to the first day of coaching.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, and hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust/focus.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.

Mental Functions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.
