Position Title: Electrical Engineer II
Location: Wilmington, NC
Contract Duration: 12+ Months (Potential for Extension)
Compensation: $40 to $42 per hour
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM
Key Responsibilities:
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or Project Management with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
Essential Skills:
- Proven expertise in providing hands-on installation support for new or modified production machinery, including troubleshooting and process initiation of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Demonstrated experience in project management tasks such as evaluating and enhancing equipment installation practices to boost efficiency, sourcing and expediting parts and materials, and ensuring that documentation, schedules, and checklists are current.
- Capability to oversee both internal and external technicians, as well as maintenance and contract trades throughout all phases of equipment installation and conversion, including demolition, construction, installation, testing, and debugging of production systems.
Required Software Proficiency:
Proficient in AutoCAD and MS Office Suite.
Role Objectives:
- Provide hands-on installation assistance for new or modified production systems.
- Direct and guide contract engineering technicians, internal maintenance teams, and external trades during all phases of equipment installation and conversion.
- Engage in hands-on troubleshooting, process initiation, design, and documentation of Electrical and Controls Systems for new or modified production equipment.
- Update existing documentation to finalize drawing packages, installation checklists, machine part lists, illustrations, and specifications for production equipment.
- Adjust machine control programs for new or existing equipment, including but not limited to robotics, automated part flow, and PLC-controlled I/O.
- Evaluate the condition and functionality of existing equipment in relation to new installation plans.
Major Duties:
- Carry out initial equipment setup and debugging until handover to operations.
- Provide advanced troubleshooting support, guiding contract engineering technicians and trades to replace faulty components and implement design changes to resolve equipment/process challenges.
- Source and expedite materials for new or modified equipment.
- Develop electrical installation checklists and timelines, overseeing their application as necessary.
- Prepare work orders and direct maintenance personnel and/or external trades in the fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation of equipment.
- Review and revise installation documentation and drawings as needed.
- Modify software programs utilized for process equipment control.
- Understand and set up machine controls for digital and analog I/O.
- Update existing schematics and collaborate with drafting services or oversee draftsmen to resolve design issues.
- Train contract engineering technicians, internal maintenance, and external trades on new equipment installation procedures to ensure successful execution of installation tasks.
- Redesign electrical components to minimize installation costs, address equipment interferences, and rectify inadequate designs.
- Analyze and enhance equipment installation practices to improve efficiency, particularly focused on optimizing installation schedules.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (4-year degree required; other degrees may be considered if relevant work experience aligns with the job description).
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
Additional Requirements:
- Majority of time spent on the production floor working with equipment.
- Strong practical hands-on skills.
- Proficient in electro-mechanical troubleshooting and familiar with electrical schematics.
- Knowledge of motion control systems: servo, stepper, DC, AC drives.
- Understanding of process variables: flow, temperature, rate, pressure, level.
- Comprehensive knowledge of current loops.
- Familiarity with serial communication protocols: RS232/485, Ethernet, IEEE-488.
- Knowledge of machine control systems and classical control theory.
Preferred Equipment/Software Experience:
- Proficient in Windows, MS Office Suite (including PowerPoint, Excel, Word), AutoCAD 2023, AutoCAD Electrical 2023, MS Project, PLC and PC-based systems, Allen-Bradley PLC, Beckhoff PLC/Motion Control, B-R Control, Fanuc Robotics, C++, Visual Basic, IFix, and automated equipment systems.
Equipment Familiarity:
- Experience with Fluke Meters, Oscilloscopes, and other electronic testing equipment.
- Familiarity with Programmable Controllers.
- Knowledge of equipment used for machine installation activities, such as man lifts and hand tools.
Additional Information:
- The team operates in Wilmington, NC, and this position is for a project based in the same location.
- Contractors who perform exceptionally well and express interest in continuing beyond the initial project may be considered for additional assignments.
