Department Head of Health and Exercise Studies

Job Summary
The Department Head of Health and Exercise Studies will provide visionary and innovative direction to the department, promoting a welcoming environment that fosters belonging for faculty, staff, and students. This senior academic leader will be responsible for managing HR and personnel issues, sustainable financial management, and representing the department at the college, division, and university levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage HR and personnel issues within the department in consultation with DASA Human Resources.
- Provide annual evaluations of direct reports and Statements of Faculty Responsibilities.
- Assign courses, faculty, and course support.
- Ensure sustainable financial management of the department in consultation with the Dean and Vice Chancellor.
- Represent and advocate for the department at the college, division, and university levels.
- Supervise and mentor 25 full-time faculty members.
- Direct curriculum development and campus/distance education course offerings.
- Create, charge, and appoint members to departmental committees.
- Make hiring, reappointment, promotion, and salary adjustment recommendations.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree or other terminal degree in a relevant field.
- Eligibility for appointment with tenure as associate or full professor in an academic department at NC State University.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in teaching and administrative responsibilities at the collegiate level.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff, and students to develop an environment that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate, form partnerships, and work effectively as a member of a goal-oriented department and division.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and facilitate growth experiences for faculty.
- Demonstrated experience with budget management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a department head/chair at the college/university level or experience in supervisory/management position(s) in the academic arena, preferably at the collegiate level.
- Demonstrated understanding of issues facing various groups of college students.
- Demonstrated ability to use and understand data to inform strategic planning and decision making.
- Strong evidence of ability to set operational goals from strategic plans and lead direct reports to accomplish these strategic goals and initiatives.
- Experience developing majors, minors, and related courses.
- Past experience in successfully managing change.
