Role Overview

Under direct supervision, the Building Permit Specialist is responsible for the intake, processing, and issuance of construction permits. This role involves providing comprehensive information to both internal and external customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitates the permit application process by verifying the accuracy and completeness of submissions, determining necessary reviews, calculating fees, and ensuring proper routing to relevant departments and agencies.
  • Offers general and technical guidance to architects, engineers, contractors, and the public regarding application procedures, requirements, and associated fees.
  • Addresses routine issues encountered during work assignments and conducts research to provide specialized property information to customers. Maintains accurate department records and files.
  • Acts as a liaison between clients and various departments, interpreting and explaining codes, plot plans, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Performs complex calculations related to fees, processes payments, and maintains daily financial records, including cash reports for accounting purposes.
  • Communicates effectively and courteously with the public and colleagues, often in high-pressure situations, while addressing customer concerns tactfully.
  • Completes other job-related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: At least one (1) year of general office experience.

Additional Requirements: Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license and obtain ICC certification within one (1) year of employment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of laws, regulations, and departmental procedures related to privacy and records management.
  • Familiarity with filing systems and research techniques.
  • Proficiency in business English, including spelling, grammar, and composition.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications and clerical practices.
Skills:
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Abilities:
  • Follow both written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Comprehend and interpret written materials.
  • Type at a minimum speed of twenty-five (25) WPM.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Demonstrate courtesy and diplomacy in all interactions.
Work Environment: The position is primarily office-based, with adequate lighting and ventilation.

Physical Requirements: Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, sufficient vision for reading, and the ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
