About the Position: Summary

Job Summary:

The Environmental Health Specialist II will perform inspections of assigned areas and settings to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental health practices and theory, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct inspections of assigned areas and settings to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Apply federal, state, and local codes and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Provide recommendations for corrective actions for inspections performed.
  • Prepare and present written reports.
  • Monitor the presence of hazardous pollutants and identify potential threats to public health and the environment.
  • Inspect public places and observe changes in the environment.
  • Answer questions from the public regarding delegated programs.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Development Services:
  • Perform site investigations for onsite wastewater system design and write detailed reports.
  • Conduct technical reviews of permit applications to determine compliance with applicable rules.
  • Conduct construction inspections of onsite wastewater systems to determine compliance with applicable rules.
  • Review well applications for compliance with setback rules.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience in environmental health or a related field.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license.
  • Current Registered Sanitarian certification in the State of Arizona.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of environmental health practices and theory.
  • Relevant federal, state, and county codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Principles, practices, and techniques of environmental health inspections, public education, compliance, and enforcement.
  • Basic biological and physical sciences applicable to environmental health.
  • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
  • Clerical office practices and procedures.
  • Research techniques and report writing.
  • Current Microsoft Office software.
  • Filing and recordkeeping.
Skills:
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Organization and adherence to detail.
  • Customer service.
Physical Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time, have sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and have the ability to communicate effectively in-person and telephonically. The candidate should also be able to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, walk over rough, uneven, and/or rocky surfaces, and lift up to 30 pounds.
