Surgical First Assistant Job Description

The Surgical First Assistant provides critical support to surgeons during operations, ensuring optimal patient outcomes. This role requires a high level of technical skill, attention to detail, and strong communication abilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist surgeons during operations, providing exposure, hemostasis, and closure.
  • Perform preoperative and postoperative duties to facilitate proper patient care.
  • Work under the direction and supervision of the surgeon, adhering to hospital policy and regulations.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate from an accredited Surgical First Assistant Program.
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) at hire or within six months of graduation.
  • Must be certified through one of the following agencies: National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA), or National Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA).
  • Required to maintain certification by completing applicable continuing education.
  • Required to complete BCLS certification within the first six months of employment.
  • A minimum of two years' experience as a surgical technologist is preferred.
Physical Demands:

The work is moderately active, involving sitting and frequent movement around the office and facility. The employee is responsible for safely moving, lifting, and handling supplies, equipment, and patients, up to 350 pounds.

Mental Demands:

The Surgical First Assistant must demonstrate keen mental faculties, assessment, and decision-making abilities. Strong communication and customer service skills are essential, as well as the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Special Demands:

The employee must possess a valid driver's license and be able to travel throughout the SRHS service area. Intermediate knowledge of MS Outlook and Word is required, as well as proficiency in using a computer and other office technology.
